Synology NAS Attacked by Ransomware

Synology NAS was developed by a company of the same name, Synology Inc. is a Taiwanese company specializing in network-attached storage devices, they are known for desktop models as DIskStation, FlashStation for flash models and RackStation for rack models.

A NAS system is a storage device, which can be connected to the local network. NAS is less expensive and provides the benefits of a local public cloud, making it possible for those who are authorized to access the files.

Ransomware is malware that has as its main objective the total or partial encryption of files, to initiate encryption the ransomware needs access to the victim’s network, for this the groups use various approaches such as spam email campaigns, malicious websites, illicit programs, brute force attack, access through RDP ports among others.

In recent years groups have emerged that specialize in NAS devices, among them is Synology, the fact that the NAS is connected directly to the Internet and centralize data storage made it the main target of attacks.

After the ransomware invades the operating system, it can move laterally by changing backup routines and access computers with more privileges. The criminals’ target is always to take away all alternatives to restore the system without a decryption key that is under the group’s power.

Therefore, backups are their main targets, and the groups use psychological pressure to make the victim see no other way out but to pay the ransom.

A ransom note is left on the desktop, in it the group directs the victim to contact the group through the .TOR browser, this note contains numerous threats should the victim choose to make the payment.

But remember that the biggest damage in these cases are the financial ones, the company can be stopped for weeks because of the data encryption. In light of this, it is necessary to know alternative solutions to paying the ransom, and the best of them is data recovery that can be done by a specialized company, such as Digital Recovery.
