Karma ransomware is a spin-off of numerous malware that started as JSWorm ransomware, became Nemty, then Nefilim, Fusion, Milihpen, Gangban, and finally Karma.
Karma remains committed to attacking Windows operating systems focused on vulnerable networks. The group has made efforts to attack Chinese companies in the engineering and manufacturing sector.
The group uses the tactic of double extortion, which is the theft of files followed by encryption of the data. This tactic is highly damaging as the servers are locked by the encryption, preventing the company from functioning, and the criminals threaten to release the encrypted files on the dark web.
The group maintains a leak site under the name Karma Leaks for leaking customer data, trade secrets among other types of files. Companies are responsible for their customers’ data and if leaked, the company can be fined.
A successful ransomware attack will always be a major disaster for any company, if there is no updated backup or if the backup was affected by the ransomware, all the options to restore the company’s operation without paying the ransom are gone.
