Fargo ransomware is malware that encrypts a victim’s data, leaving it absolutely inaccessible.
Fargo belongs to the TargetCompany group, which began its operations around June 2021 with a ransomware strain called Mallox. This ransomware targeted organisations in Asia and refused to encrypt files on machines located in Russia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, and Qatar.
In February 2022, Avast released a decryptor for the ransomware Mallox, leading to the suspension of its operations.
However, in September 2022, the TargetCompany group returned with a new variant of its malware, called Fargo ransomware.
Fargo ransomware deletes registry keys and disables any type of recovery service on the infected machine. Before encryption, the ransomware terminates certain SQL-related processes and then proceeds with encryption, taking into account specific file types that should not be encrypted.
This new variant is more robust and more complex to recover from. Fargo uses a hybrid encryption process with ChaCha20, AES-128, and Curve25519 algorithms.
Immediately after encryption, the ransomware appends the “.fargo3” extension to the original names of the infected files. As a result, files with this extension become inaccessible to the user.
A ransom note in a text file is then generated within the environment. In this file, called “RECOVERY FILES.txt”, the victim will find step-by-step instructions on how to contact the attackers and make the ransom payment.
