Data recovery after contact with water

We have seen in recent months how Rio Grande do Sul has been affected by heavy rains causing damage throughout the state, and this is an extremely worrying scenario.

After heavy and persistent rains and the resulting floods, not only homes but also many businesses were affected by the consequences of the masses of water and mud. As a result, many companies lost their data.

In addition to the actual damage to property, water damage usually also affects the business existence of those affected. Many servers, NAS, computers and hard drives that were located in flooded companies were paralyzed by the flood.

Water damage can lead to considerable data loss, destroy electronic components and, in some cases, even penetrate inside hard disks. All valuable and vital data now appears to be lost. Such fatal data loss due to water or mud damage doesn’t necessarily have to happen!

Correct action in the event of flood damage

What to do in case of flooding or water? The following tips are very important when it comes to servers, NAS or hard disks that have been flooded and need data recovery:

  • Don’t dry out the storage media: Send the hard drive to a specialist company as soon as possible. Although the water got into the hard disk on its own, it won’t come out without opening it up, special handling and cleaning the internal components of all impurities.
  • Do not plug the storage media back in under any circumstances: Even if the hard disk appears to be completely dry on the outside, the assumption that it is also dry on the inside is unfortunately incorrect. Water contains minerals and impurities that will damage the internal components of the hard disk the longer they remain in contact with each other. The magnetic platters of a hard disk are actually insensitive to minerals and impurities in water, but their surface should not be exposed to friction under any circumstances in this state.
  • Contact a company specializing in data recovery as soon as possible: Make sure that the company you have entrusted your hard drive to also works with cases of data loss due to flooding, water or other liquid damage. Companies that don’t fully master the technique of wiping hard drives have very little chance of success in such cases.
